Q. How does having fun or playing help us?
A. It's better to play than to sit miserable. We create pain by our thoughts. If one thinks, "How miserable I am." the feeling of being miserable starts to grow in the mind. In the same way, if one thinks how fun it is to play volleyball or baseball, etc.. the misery doesn't take hold. Life is not a burden. We make it a burden. In poor countries, among people who get food once a day, you can see them singing, playing, happy. On the other hand, those who are eating all day long you can see them sitting miserable. A wealthy man who can have anything he desires is still miserable. So there's nothing outside which can really give happiness; you have to create it within.
